Much time has passed since we last blogged. So much has happened and there isn't enough time in the day to do all of it. Here's what's new...
1. By the Bay Botanicals has a new home at 7 East Main Street, Westminster, MD. Our Grand Opening was June 22, and was a big success. Since the opening we have had many returned guests talking about how they loved their freebie candle and back for more or wanted to redeem coupons given out at the event.
2. We have a new employee - Crystal. She is our chief retail sales associate and store artist. Crystal, a Westminster native, has a lot to offer from an amazing creative talent in drawing, but shares our passion for our candles eager to share her own experience about the candles we offer and helpful for all who have questions. To boot she makes authentic dream catchers that we sell in our shop too!
3. We have two new candles - Westminster Candy Apple and Kentucky Vanilla Sunrise. While the Westminster Candy Apple candle is available on our website, the new Kentucky candle will be added shortly for all to purchase.

What happens when you or a loved one has just learned they have breast cancer? Get angry? Cry? Fight? Perhaps all of these things? As the owner of By the Bay Botanicals, I learned my mother Carol was diagnosed with breast cancer in April. Both of our minds were spinning with questions of why, how, what are we going to do. One thing you do learn right away is you are not alone. So many people including nurses, doctors, survivors and friends and family are willing and able to help support the patient's journey towards a cure. Since April my mother had a very long journey towards curing cancer by having two lumpectomies, chemotherapy treatments, and a double mastectomy. Today, she is cured, but swears she couldn't have been able to do it without the help and support of family and friends. It is this idea, to want to help others who are taking the same journey of beating breast cancer, which inspired the creation of a breast cancer awareness candle. This candle is meant to be a beacon or light shining hope and love for those battling cancer. Additionally, $1.00 from the sale of each candle will be donated to the Susan G. Komen Foundation. To get your candle now or learn more, click on the photo. This candle can only be bought through By the Bay Botanicals website and future art and craft festivals where By the Bay Botanicals products will be sold.

Here at By the Bay Botanicals, we are super happy to finally announce that we do custom labeling for our candles and car fresheners as well as making custom candles for anyone! The future is now, in the world of having something special and personalized. Our cars, smart phones, even M&M's - we want them to be special and By the Bay Botanicals is able to do that too.
The company has been doing custom candles and labeling since the company started, however a plan of how to convey this to public has never been addressed. The process of having a custom labeled product is simple - just 5 Steps which include picking a scent, color, and what you want you want your labels to look like. All of the work is done in house - labels as well as the making of the products so turn around time is shorter than with most other companies. The average time to create an order from start to finish is 3 weeks. One week to create a mock up of the art work and tweaking it for approval followed by 1-2 weeks for production time. Large orders, such as those for gift shops, may take up to 4 weeks.
So, who would want a custom candle label or even car fresheners? Many people - from high school reunions favors, weddings, corporate promotional events, family reunions, retirement parties, even gift shops looking for a unique way to highlight the aromas of their region and sell them to their customers.
Prices vary depending on the volume of the order, but there is a one time customization fee of $30 per each custom product. To learn more visit our Customization Page of our website or Contact Us with your questions! - Michelle, Owner of By the Bay Botanicals
Carol, my mom and huge supporter of By the Bay Botanicals, revealed to me a few days before Easter that the growth was cancer. We told ourselves (rather fooled ourselves), believing prior to the news, there is no way it could be cancer as breast cancer doesn't run in our family. But apparently it isn't just a hereditary disease as many have thought it to be. My mom and I talked quite awhile about it sharing info she had learned from the doctors and so on. Sure the worst thought did cross our mind, but after a thorough consultation with those involved, we were quickly reassured that this type of breast cancer is easily treatable through surgery.
It is was that point my mom and I wanted to do something to help others with the news, fighting the fight, or at the very least help memorialize those who lost the battle of breast cancer. We came up with a simple promotion for the month of April - as April is the month Carol would be going through her surgery - that One Candle Can Make a Difference. Choosing three different pink candles from the Destination Scentsations candle line, the three we're offered them at a discount of $1.00 off and an extra $1.00 would then be donated to the Susan G. Komen Foundation to help with breast cancer research. To help promote this we simply did a video together posted on By the Bay Botanicals website and Youtube and linked it to Facebook and other social media outlets the company is involved with as well as word of mouth with people at our churches, friends and family. Since April is now over and all the orders have been filled, we can happily say 22 candles sold bringing our total donation from our customers to $22.00! As an added bonus, By the Bay Botanicals is going to match the amount for a total donation of $44.00. The payment will be made May 6, 2012. We aim to do another fund raiser come Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
The feedback and outpour of support for my mom - who has heard every Facebook post, email, etc. - has truly helped her find hope and courage, but the fight has just begun. To date she had one surgery at Anne Arundel Medical Center to remove the tumor, but the results from the pathology report on April 29th showed not enough was removed. The surgeon has recommended another surgery to remove what is left, but an MRI needs to be done. The waiting is the worst as the shock mixed with fear makes both of us wonder "what if this doesn't work". However thoughts shift to wanting the whole thing to be over with and know it is importnat to stay positive. Again the encouragement, positive energy, & prayers is what really helps in staying focused.
This is why I would like to put it out there that there will be days in the near future that By the Bay Botanicals will not be holding regular business hours due to doctors appointments and to show our support. The business is a very small one. Family matters is more important than money here as you only have so little time with those who matter. This means we will try and answer all emails and phone calls as soon as possible - within a 24-48 hour turn around time. Orders may be processed in 3-5 days instead of 1-2 days. Production time for creating products that are either out of stock or close to being out of stock may take more time to process too. We merely ask for your patience. By the Bay Botanicals is not going anywhere we do think of our fans and friends as family and have a responsibility to you too as we want to continue to have that relationship with you. Thank you for your time and well wishes! I will keep you updated via Facebook on the progress.

Robins are singing. Baskets are full of chocolate candies... and marshmallow peeps! Trees are full of blossoms. Spring is finally here! With winter behind us, there is must to look forward to - Easter, Spring Break, and new beginnings. Here at By the Bay Botanicals we're busy working on new projects as well as Spring cleaning and organizing.
One thing you might notice in the next few days, are updates to the art fairs that we'll be involved with. While many of our handmade products are getting into shops, we will remain present at art fairs and Spring as it is a good time for that and love interacting with our fans at shows as it is one of the best ways to meet people and get our products directly in peoples hands to smell and touch and purchase. We will be at a few shows such as Wine in the Woods in Columbia, MD this May and the Somerset Strawberry Festival in June. As we get confirmation letters the info will be posted on our Calendar page. We encourage all who are interested in our candles to come out and support us - even if it is just to say hi. We really want to get put faces with the names we have emailed or tweeted with and think you may find the experience at these shows we sell at truly fun especially with family and friends. You never know, you might find a great Mother's Day gift, something to hang on a bare wall, or great excuse to get out and enjoy the fresh air and warm weather.
In addition to art fairs we're also still working on updating our website and one of the things we've just added to our site is a way to sign up for a monthly newsletter. It is a simple newsletter that will have interesting candle facts, travel website links and tips, news about up coming shows, info on new candle scents we'll be coming out with, coupon offers, and other By the Bay Botanicals info. The once a month newsletter is free! Signing up for the newsletter also allows us to deliver our info to you vs. trying to find it yourself or get behind in news we have to offer. Sign up today on our Home Page.
In speaking of new, did you hear that we have a candle collection called The Hawaiian Collection? We have decided to start making a few candle collections based on various popular travel locations. Hawaii being THE biggest tourist destination in the world, we couldn't resist starting here. With the collection you'll find 4 different candle scents - North Shore Surfer's Paradise, Waimea White Gardenia, Waikiki Teakwood Tiki, and Maui Pineapple Plantation. All smell out of this world and true to nature. They come in the following sizes - Weekender (12 oz.), Vacation Getaway (27 oz.), set of 4 tea lights and just this week all four scents are available in 3 oz. candles - sold together for $15.00. This will help in the decision making process of which one to choose as now you can afford to try all 4! The Hawaiian Collection is available on this website, just click on any of the 4 scents to learn more.
Lastly, we are proud to announce our candle of the Month for April is Williamsburg Wisteria. A wildly popular candle that is only offered for a limited time is ready for the taking. Inspired by the wonderful sites and sounds of Colonial Williamsburg, this wisteria candle will surely delight all with its heavenly aroma often described as a mixture of hyacinths and lilacs. We learned popular candle review site candlefind.com reviewed several of our candles and announced it on the front page of their website! This is great - scratch that - FANTASTIC! But then a moment of doubt enters the mind - what if they didn't like it. It's that moment of truth we were faced with before hearing either the best news in the world or the worst. Up until this point we've been striving to constantly improve our candles - the fragrances, the labels, etc. Despite all that hard work the words, "I've just reviewed your candle..." can easily turn a solid stomach to one full of butterflies. Do you want to hear what they have to say about our candles? Here's the link... http://candlefind.com/candle-reviews/avery-jordan-candle-reviews/by-the-bay-botanicals.html

November, as well as December are hectic months for any business. We here at By the Bay Botanicals are not immune to this especially as people are starting early looking for gift ideas for the holidays. One of the best gifts to give anyone - a teacher, sister, mom, nurse/caregiver, etc. is a candle. Not only are they beautiful, unique aromas can lift spirits, but come in handy during power outages too. Through our company we give more than just candles, our candle line - Destination Scentsations, we give vacations! Sounds crazy but if you think about it each of our scented palm wax candles are inspired by popular travel destinations. So whether you are know someone who can't make it home for the holidays (yet give the gift that reminds them of their hometown/state) or someone who deserves a vacation for all the hard work they do for you, give them the gift of a vacation - in a jar! With regard to narrowing down holiday gift giving lists, keep us in mind for your gift giving needs. Contact us today about what candles you might be ordering in the near future to ensure that our supplies will be full allowing us to guarantee that you're candle orders will be filled and shipped before the holidays. It is ok to place orders now and request to have them shipped at a later date too.
While this might not be of interest to all, a decision has been made to not use the silver "Destination Scentsation" labels on our candles. The main reason is due to the label buckling when adhered to a curved surface like that of our jars. Since the candle line name is already on the lid and making for a more visually stunning candle, we've decided to not use the silver labels any more. This also helps to cut costs allowing us to use that money to improve candle making equipment and purchasing more supplies.
Here's another reason to follow us on Twitter - @BayBotanicals... Lately I have been catching up on some news articles involving candle news and tweeting about them. As the holiday's approach there are more and more articles, from house fires started by candles to candle decorating ideas, I am sharing those articles on Twitter! Why? If you love candles half as much as I do, then chances are there's a lot of info on the topic and one of the best ways to keep up on that info is reading up on the news. In addition to our own company news, I merely want to pass on other candle news to other candle enthusiasts too. Thanks, in advance for following and let me know if you have candle news of your own - I'll be happy to share your candle news on Twitter too!
That is all the news I have for today. Thanks for reading, as more news occurs, that info will be posted here in our blog as well as on our Facebook and Twitter sites. - Michelle
