_With Valentine's Day around the corner, do you ever wonder if it is more of a "Hallmark" holiday than anything else? Just another day to buy someone something to appease them just because everyone else is doing the same thing? Perhaps.
Many holidays, when you break down their origins, are taken out of context and often repackaged as a commercial holiday. When you dissect such holidays, there is an underlying point. With Valentine's Day, the underlying point is paying respect to a Saint who did a selfless act for the sake of love. Today, whether love is found in a true friend, a spouse, or secret admirer, February 14th is the one day to show that loved one how much you mean to them.
To show love, does that mean you have to go out and buy roses, candy, or other costly gifts. No. It means it means telling that special person what they mean to you. A gift is merely an extended gesture of affection and shouldn't be forced. A loving gesture can be in a form of a playlist of love songs for his/her iPod, short but sweet handwritten love notes that can be found throughout the day, to even a romantic evening at home with the first movie you watched together in room lit with candles.
So to answer the question, it is up to you. You have a choice to let Valentine's Day be a "Hallmark" day or turn it into a special day, showing someone you love them by being a creative and resourceful with a gift of a memory that will last all year long.
