Ever watched the show on ABC, Shark Tank? I have only started watching during the current season, Season 4 and am <pardon the pun> hooked! For my business, By the Bay Botanicals, I've always toyed with the idea of wanting to do so much more for the company especially in advertising it and moving it out of our home workshop and into a larger facility that would accommodate our production needs. And if we could fit it in, a little bit of space designated for retail/showroom. This all takes money, and that is something many small businesses do not have today - including By the Bay Botanicals.
It was when a little icon flashed on the screen, during a recent episode of the show, for auditions, I thought what the heck, what does one need to do to get on the show? Of course there are application forms and other standard procedures, however learned that one of the audition cities is nearby - in Philadelphia, for just one day in May. I mentioned to Mark, my husband, mom and 2 close friends all of which are very supportive of the idea. Our discussions are much like the ones you would have if you won the lottery or strategies of what to say if "X Shark" asked a question about sales. Mind you talking about this possibility has really helped take me and my mom's mind off her medical issues too - it's almost therapeutic having the distraction.
I really do believe have a good chance on getting on the show as By the Bay Botanicals candle line, Destination Scentsations is truly a unique product unlike any other candles in the market place. Part of battle is having a good product. Also, we're realistic about this possibility. The chances of getting on the show are slim after all there are probably thousands who have great ideas and services also trying to compete for a 10-15 min. spot on the show too. So, why do it? You only live once. I want my business to succeed because making a better candle than those in the marketplace now should not only be clean burning and safe. but through green practices we all can help to ensure the environment will be better for generations to come. If a little bit of seed money from investors like the sharks on Shark Tank can help me achieve my American Dream, then anything is possible. This seems to be a billboard of a door that we cannot ignore. Side note: I have already done one practice audition in Philadelphia recently with positive feedback.
The real audition is coming up in less than a week. I do have some irons in the fire to help aid me in my business goals in case I do not make the cut for the show. I will update you all via Facebook with how the audition went! Meanwhile, I could use some luck. Anyone have a rabbits foot or 4-leaf clover I could borrow?
